Keep an entertainment and internet culture newsroom running at its best, day in and day out

About The Mary Sue

The Mary Sue is known for feminist-leaning pop culture and geek media coverage that celebrates women, diversity, and LGBTQIA+ voices, and takes entertainment and fandom seriously as cultural forces. In 2026, we’re evolving to make sure we’re always on top of the biggest stories in online culture, entertainment, politics, and anything else that piques the interest of our diverse audience, while maintaining the tone and voice that has always made us a go-to destination for our readers.

The Role

We're looking for an Associate Editor to oversee our day-to-day editorial workflow and output. This is an important role as you'll be ensuring a busy newsroom of staff and freelance writers are supported in their efforts to publish articles in a timely manner while maintaining high editorial standards.

The right candidate will be constantly communicating with their colleagues and working at a fast pace, so should truly love being part of a busy newsroom environment. You’ll be reviewing pitches, editing copy efficiently, and making sure we meet our publishing guidelines and ethics policies. You’ll have oversight of a high volume of timely, topical news and pop culture coverage, as well as some long-form, SEO-driven pieces. With this in mind, a sharp eye for detail and an ability to react quickly matters just as much as overall polish.

What You'll Do

  • Edit and publish articles day-to-day across entertainment, politics, and internet culture, maintaining The Mary Sue's voice and quality standards.
  • Short-form video curation and/or distribution will be a key part of the role moving forward, so prior experience is a plus
  • Review and accept writer pitches, and edit copy quickly and to a high standard, working alongside other editorial team members
  • Be a steady point of contact for staff writers and freelancers, answering questions and solving workflow problems and bottlenecks as they come up
  • Check coverage against publishing guidelines and requirements, including specific guidelines for platforms like MSN, Newsbreak, and Yahoo
  • Flag issues, standout work, and anything else worth escalating or elevating
  • Help maintain consistency and momentum across a high-output newsroom

What We're Looking For

  • Solid editing experience in a fast-moving news, culture, or entertainment newsroom
  • Comfortable with a high volume of timely, topical articles and/or video, and the fast pace that comes with this responsibility
  • Experience working with WordPress and tools like Trello or Asana
  • Comfortable editing a high daily volume of copy without sacrificing quality
  • A passion and familiarity with TV & Movies, general entertainment, and internet culture
  • A good sense and understanding of The Mary Sue's voice
  • An organized editor that both writers and the Managing Editor can rely on
  • Experience with syndication platforms (MSN, Newsbreak, Smart News, or similar) is a bonus
  • Comfortable working remotely and keeping communication levels high

Interested? Send us your resume and a cover letter outlining your editing experience, familiarity with our coverage areas, and why you think you’d be the perfect fit for this role.
