Embedded Software Engineer II, Aviation

The Problem

As Flock scales our fleet of custom devices and real-time aerial systems, delivering a rock-solid, high-performance embedded Linux distribution is critical to field operations. Managing resource-constrained hardware and real-time drone applications requires software engineers who can build clean low-level platform features and troubleshoot live device behavior. You will implement core Yocto Linux platform components, optimize system efficiency, and keep our edge hardware operating reliably in the field.

What You'll Own

  • Implement and deliver core C and C++ software components for our Yocto-based embedded Linux platform.
  • Conduct lab-based bring-up, debugging, and on-device performance testing on real-world drone and camera hardware.
  • Identify, isolate, and resolve software defects and hardware integration issues discovered during development or in field deployments.
  • Document system architectures, technical designs, and test plans to ensure seamless cross-functional team execution.
  • Author automation scripts in Python or Bash and contribute to CI/CD workflows to improve build systems and development processes.

What This Role is Not

  • This isn't a traditional desktop software role, you'll work directly on resource-constrained hardware, custom SoCs, and real-world drone applications.
  • This is not a high-level application layer job, you will spend your time in low-level Linux environments, Yocto build layers, bootloaders, and system-level C and C++ code.
  • This isn't a passive bug-fixing assignment, you'll actively take ownership of platform features, board bring-ups, and internal build tool enhancements.

What You Bring

  • Proficiency in C and C++ development and debugging within embedded Linux environments.
  • Hands-on experience with the Yocto Project or similar embedded build systems like Buildroot or OpenEmbedded.
  • Understanding of low-level Linux concepts, including bootloaders such as U-Boot, shell scripting, and basic kernel configuration.
  • Familiarity with source control tools like Git and continuous integration pipelines using GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
  • Practical experience with Rust for embedded systems, Qualcomm SoCs, ARM architectures, or Linux device drivers is a plus.

Compensation

In this role, you'll receive a starting salary between $115,000 and $140,000 as well as Flock Stock Options. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, as well as market indicators. Your recruiter will discuss this in depth with you during our first chat.

Why Flock

Every community deserves to be safe. Flock builds the technology that makes that real: last year we supported over 1 million criminal investigations and helped locate more than 10,000 missing people. We're 1,700 people building the impossible with over $1B in funding, and the expectations are high on purpose. If you want a role where the stakes are real and the pace matches, this is it.

Some problems get solved faster in the same room, so we prioritize candidates in Atlanta and Boston. Hub-based roles mean real in-person time with your coworkers. Remote roles exist, and when a posting is open to remote work, it says so.

Building the impossible takes every kind of mind. Flock is an equal opportunity employer, and we know the best solutions come from diverse perspectives, experiences, and skills working together with mutual respect. Everyone is welcome to apply. If you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, email [email protected] ; your information stays confidential and is used only to arrange the right accommodation for your interviews.

On compensation: we pay fairly for the work. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education, training, and market indicators. The range in this posting covers base salary only and doesn't include equity, sales bonus plans where applicable, or benefits. The range may be adjusted over time, and this posting may span more than one career level.

One last thing: all legitimate communication from Flock comes from an email ending in @ flocksafety.com or [email protected] .
